Some Sample Saturdays start at sunrise. . . not this week! If you are still recovering from last week’s spring ahead, then this Sample post is for you – it doesn’t begin until 11:00 a.m.! After a leisurely morning, maybe some waffles for breakfast and a cup of your favorite warm beverage, head out into the city and try one or all of these fun and ARTSY activities that we found To Do In This Town.
International Quilt Study Museum
National Quilting Day – Free Admission
11:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Our kids have been the lucky recipients of many handmade and quilted items from family. If yours have too, celebrate those gifts and the people who made them by visiting the International Quilt Study Museum and learning about the craft of quilting. There will be exhibitions, tours, demonstrations, project displays and even free quilter bags to the first 200 people Saturday morning. Admission to the museum is free today so in our quest to celebrate the arts this month, we would encourage you tour the museum and learn more about this pleasing pastime.
Michaels Birthday Party Bash
1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
We often highlight the free craft activities at Michaels but this one has a two-fold purpose that won’t just be fun today. Attending this event could create future fun with crafting as well. Michaels Birthday Bash event is designed for the kids to purchase a $2.50 t-shirt and then paint it. While the kids are busy, the parents get to learn and experience what a birthday party at Michaels is all about. Great marketing but great plus for parents of little artists too! Try before you book.

LUX Center for the Arts
Family Art Afternoon – Fibers & Textiles
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
We couldn’t leave this one out! We LUV the LUX @To Do In This Town! Last month, our family tried our hand at the printmaking family art class. Take a look at our Artists Wanted post to see our very cool results. I would highly suggest you consider this month’s family class for your budding artists. The media will be fibers and textiles.
Husker Lawn & Leisure Show
10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Another don’t miss event! Check out our Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Attend Post from earlier this week for more details. To fit the art theme for this event might be a stretch – except when you realize that there will be an Iron Florist competition at the show! Come and watch art being created at the show by florists from across Nebraska! Then, don’t forget to stop by our booth and say hello! We love to hear from our readers.
Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company Presents Snow White
7:00 – 9:00 p.m. McDonald Auditorium
I have to say I don’t know much about this performance but it is a classic fairy tale that is loved by many. And, as a dance parent, I would urge you to support these fine young artists. Many rehearsals, sore muscles and a lot of heart goes into any ballet performance. It would be worth exposing your children to this cultural event to wrap up our Arts themed Saturday. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students and are available by calling 467-0065.
