Saturday looks to be another nice spring day in Lincoln! Why not get out and enjoy it? Try one of the outdoor activities here or find other indoor options on our Calendar of Events. There is Always Something To Do In This Town!

Indigo Bridge Books – Bilingual Story Time

10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Every Saturday morning, you can bring the kiddos down for a story in English with Spanish vocabulary, a game of Spanish BINGO and a related craft to wrap up the hour. While story time is intended for ages 4-8, most children find one of the activities fun and educational.

Antelope Park – 29th & A Streets

Open all day and a hit with the kids and adults . . .Antelope Park is a great place for a picnic, a ride down the slide, or I even saw someone flying a kite there this week.

Holmes Lake – 70th & Normal

If you are feeling adventurous, you might try some fishing in Holmes Lake. Or, if you’d rather, a nice walk around the lake is nice too. The kids can find some fun on the unique playground equipment. If it were us, we would probably fish in the afternoon, pack a picnic dinner, and then stay for the sunset.

Hyde Observatory – Holmes Lake

7:00 – 10:00 p.m.

What is better than the sunset at Holmes Lake? The stars at the Hyde Observatory after the sunset. Learn about light pollution and how you can increase at night and still see the stars (10 minutes). The other video is “Winter Constellations” (length for constellation programs 20 minutes). Then, go out on the observatory deck and take a look at the beautiful night sky.

National Camps for Blind Children

Sunday, March 18th from 11:00 – 2:00 pm. ** With Special Guest: Mike Mennard * *

Since its organization, over 50,000 campers have attended these specialty camps.

Each camp is scheduled at a well-equipped site, chosen especially for the standard of excellence and geographical location. Committed staff and counselors are trained to meet the needs of blind and legally blind campers. Medical personnel are on duty 24 hours a day. Emergency care is available when needed.

The camps are FREE to blind and legally blind persons, except for a nonrefundable processing fee of $35, thanks to gifts from generous donors. These camps are for blind and legally blind persons who are between the ages of 9 and 65 and whose corrected vision is no better than 20/200.

There isn’t just something To Do this weekend in Lincoln – there is LOTS to do! Boys Basketball is in town, so drive carefully and plan for extra time in the downtown areas. If you want to get away from the “city” life, you could check out the Great Nebraska Horse Fair. Or, there are lots of other fun events – keep reading and Find Something To Do In This Town!

Great Nebraska Horse Fair
– Lancaster Event Center

9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Horses, horses, horses! If you have a horse lover in your family, you don’t want to miss the Nebraska Equine Associations Great Nebraska Horse Fair this weekend. Admission is free. The Saturday schedule – click here – is full and interesting. There are a couple special presenters – Ken McNabb a traditional cowboy and Reese Koffler-Stanfield a Dressage champion. The show is also open Friday, March 9th.

Marcus Theaters – Puss in Boots

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

I know we have highlighted this event before – but there are only two weeks left! If you enjoy the movies, but not the ticket price, this is a $2 per person event held at either South Pointe or The Grand theaters. This week’s show is Puss in Boots or next weekend you can take in Chipwrecked – Alvin and the Chipmunks. If Saturday doesn’t work in your schedule, there are also showings on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Michaels – South Pointe

1:00 – 3:00 or 3:00 – 5:00

We haven’t featured Michaels in a few weeks – but they are back with two good crafts. From 1:00 – 3:00, you can purchase a solid color t-shirt and learn to make a bag/purse from it – I love bags so this one is right up my alley! Or, if you are free later in the day, from 3:00 – 5:00, the staff will be demonstrating how to make a yarn doll. The doll event is free and can provide lots of creative play time for your child.

Barnes & Noble – South Pointe

2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Are your kiddos enthralled by magic tricks? Does your son carry around a deck of magic cards like mine does? Well, if so, you won’t want to miss this special event being held at Barnes & Noble South Pointe. The Lincoln Magic Club will have magicians roaming the store and amazing patrons with their tricks. While a good magician never reveals his secrets, I’m sure you could pick up a magic book or two for your young magician to practice!

No Coast Derby Girls – Pershing Center

7:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Tired out yet? If your answer is never, you’ll fit right in with the No Coast Derby Girls. See them try to make a comeback from last week’s heart breaking loss as they take on the Cheyenne Capidolls. The doors open at 6:00 with the derby beginning at 7:00. Kids twelve and under are free. General admission tickets are $11 and you always get your money’s worth from these ladies!

There is Always Something To Do In This Town!

Indigo Bridge Bilingual Story Time

10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Every Saturday morning, you can bring the kiddos down for a story in English with Spanish vocabulary, a game of Spanish BINGO and a related craft to wrap up the hour. While story time is intended for ages 4-8, most children find one of the activities fun and educational. Indigo Bridge is one of the best Lincoln has to offer! I would highly encourage you to support this event, the store, and the Cafe. You won’t be sorry.

Special Olympics – Polar Plunge

Holmes Lake

9:30 a.m. – Noonish

According to Special Olympics Nebraska, “this bone-chilling event invites participants, also known as plungers, to collect pledges from friends and family for plunging into the icy waters of Holmes Lake located at 64th & Normal in Lincoln. All of the proceeds from this event help support the more than 4,000 intellectually disabled athletes who are a part of Special Olympics Nebraska. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. Teams and individual plunges will start at 11:00 a.m.” If you have a family member or friend to support, this is a worthy cause and a fun event. Bundle up!
