What We Do

We're uncovering lots To Do In Lincoln. After reading our BLOG, browsing our CALENDAR, or SEARCHing our site, you'll never again say, 'There's nothing To Do In This Town.'

Sample Saturday for April 20th, 2013

Spring may be in the air, or it may never come to Lincoln, Nebraska. I’m just thankful for rain rather than snow, cloudy skies rather than chemical-filled ones and a few more weeks of training for those racers who will, God-willing, run safely in the Lincoln Marathon. We live in a great city with great people and even greater opportunities. Find Something To Do In This Town.

Mueller Planetarium & Morrill Hall

Astronomy Day

9:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Morrill Hall and the Mueller Planetarium are a cool place to visit any weekend. There you will find fun exhibits, interesting facts, and hands-on experiences. But, this weekend is special. This is Astronomy Day. According to a UNL press release, “Attendees will learn about planets, optics, telescopes, physics, robotics, space travel, nanotechnology and more. Many organizations will be presenting activities and demonstrations. The event features prizes, educational laser shows, and activities about space, science and more. Regular museum admission will be required. Museum members are free.”

Showings of “Lasers in Astronomy” by Prismatic Magic are also available for an additional fee in the Mueller Planetarium. This educational laser show explores how state-of-the-art laser technology is helping astronomers better understand the universe. Show times are 11 a.m., noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Evening performances are also available – “Laser Beatles” (which is 40 minutes long) shows at 8 p.m. “Laser Led Zeppelin” (50 minutes) shows at 9 p.m.  The Led Zeppelin show is not intended for children.

Tickets, available at the museum’s front desk the day of the show only, are $8 general admission and $7 for members (with a valid ID card).

UNL Rodeo – Kids Performance

Lancaster Event Center

Noon – 4:00 p.m.

If stars aren’t your thing, perhaps you are a bit more into animals? Well, if so, you should mosey on out to the Lancaster Event Center. There you will find 250 college rodeo athletes from Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota who will be trying to earn their way to the College National Finals in Casper, Wyoming. They will compete in 9 different events composed of Bareback Riding, Break Away Roping, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding. Come and help support your Husker Rodeo Team!

Kids day will start at noon on Saturday. There will be FREE family friendly activities to participate in promoting agriculture and rodeo awareness. Children 12 and under will get in free for the Saturday 1:30pm performance ONLY. Tickets are $8 for adults in advance or $12 at the door.

Neat Repeatz – 8400 Cody Drive

9:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Last week we featured an event at the Lancaster Event Center – if you didn’t make it to the Northeast part of Lincoln, perhaps you can venture down into the Southwest corner. Neat Repeatz is in a new location this year – 8400 Cody Drive. And, while it is a bit of drive, it can be worth your time to pick up in season items for your kids that are in great shape at even better prices. Get brand names and save a bundle. Many of the items on Saturday will be 25% off – for an even better sale – check it out Sunday where lots of items will be 50% off.

**Special Sunday Event**

Lincoln’s Earth Day Celebration

Antelope Park

Noon – 5:00 p.m.

Earth Day is officially Monday, April 22nd. However, Lincoln will celebrate on Sunday, April 21st. You can find the majority of the kid friendly events at Antelope Park. From Noon – 5:00 there will be a Party in the Park with farmer’s market vendors, expo booths, and earth-friendly demonstrations. Some of the activities are yet to be announced, so if you are feeling like an adventure, bike on over to Antelope Park on Sunday and check out the many unique Earth Day offerings.

Weekend Activities for April 19, 20, & 21, 2013

A Spring Weekend of Wonder can await you! Find lots of fun family activities here – don’t miss the once a year events like UNL’s spring rodeo or take in something more consistent such as the Indigo Bridge story time. There is Always Something To Do in This Town.

Sample Saturday for April 13th, 2013

Build Lincoln this weekend at the Children’s Museum – all for free! Or, if that isn’t your style, perhaps you would like to update the kids’ style by outfitting their summer wardrobe. You can find that opportunity at the Lancaster Event Center with the Take 2 Consignment Sale. Finally, there are lots of great theater offerings in the next few weeks as the local universities finish up their seasons. Visit the town of Spoon River and hear the stories the dead have to tell in Spoon River Anthologies at Nebraska Wesleyan. Or, check out the UNL Theatrix program’s version of Taming of the Shrew. There is Always Something To Do In This Town.

Lincoln Children’s Museum

Lincoln Logs Event

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Exciting doesn’t begin to describe this event on Saturday! First, admission to the Children’s Museum is FREE all day Saturday. The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and many business partners are planning to break two Guinness World Records on Saturday. The Lincoln Log build event will be in the center of the museum, however there will be tons of great kid activities throughout the entire building. You can have a free lumberjack photo taken in the FOTObrations FOTObooth. Or, you can build your own Lincoln Log structure or other fun activities based on this weekend’s big goal! This is certainly one for the record books!

Take 2 Consignment Sale

Lancaster Event Center

10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

‘Tis the season where the weather changes, repeatedly, and as it warms up you realize just how much your children have grown in just a few months. There are several consignment sales – this one kicks off the season. Take 2 will be at the Lancaster Event Center. The sale opens Thursday and runs through Sunday. Stop out there and peek at the next larger size for your kiddos. We have always found great bargains there.

Nebraska Wesleyan – Spoon River Anthology

7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

If you aren’t familiar with Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology, let me encourage you to attend this show. A bit dark and twisted at times, this is a bunch of epitaphs of the community’s most upstanding and down in the gutter citizens. Plus, you get the perspectives of everyone in between. I think seeing this show staged would be a great experience – especially if you have read a few of the stories of the people from this small Illinois town. Tickets are $10 and the show will be performed in the Miller Theater on the Wesleyan Campus.

UNL Theatrix – Taming of the Shrew

7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

If you haven’t been to a UNL Theatrix production lately, this would be a great one. Not only is it a great show, being one of Shakespeare’s early comedies, but I have it on good authority that this is an exceptional cast. The show runs this weekend and next, so if your calendar is full this week, you may want to get your tickets now. You can call the Lied Center box office at 402-472-4747 or get them online at the link above.

However, if it ends up being a bit more like winter than spring, you can find that too! There is Always Something To Do in This Town.

Sample Saturday for April 6th, 2013

Easter is in the books, now bring on Spring! Below are a few events that might get you and your family in the mood for more fun. There are a wide variety of events this weekend – if these don’t suit your tastes, check out our Calendar of Events for more! You Can Always Find Something To Do In This Town!

Lincoln Gem & Mineral Show

Lancaster Event Center

9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

I featured this event last year because I thought it was cool. However, I just couldn’t pass it up this year because it is has a very special theme – the “Emerald Jubilee”. The event will be held in conjunction with the Annual Convention of the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies and the Nebraska Association of Earth Science Clubs. Dealers, demos, children’s activities, educational programs, rough & uncut gems, agates, gemstones, minerals, fossils, petrified wood, equipment & supplies, gifts, and fun! Adult Admission: $5, Adult 2-day pass: $9, Children 11 and under free with paid adult. They have a featured International Gem Dealer by the name of Dallas Patterson who has been called the “Indiana Jones of Gems.” Check this event out and then tell us what you think in our Comments section.

Husker Spring Scrimmage Game

2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Last year’s event was called due to weather. This year’s event looks to be a great one as always. A full game is often too expensive or too long for kids to enjoy. The Spring Game brings all the excitement and atmosphere of the Husker Nation Game Day experience without all the expense. That makes this an ideal “First Game” experience. And, if the kids get bored, you can always head out early – there are no concerns about who is going to win. Tickets are available online – over 40,000 have been sold which means there are still plenty available – get them online or at the game. $10 for adults. Kids grades 8 and under can get in free if they take a Drug Free pledge at halftime. If this is your plan, here is a note from the Husker site, “Youth must still secure a complimentary ticket for admittance by contacting the Ticket Office this week. On game day, complimentary tickets for youth must be obtained at the Ticket Office main inside windows.”

Lincoln Community Playhouse

Season 68 Announcement

7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

I have it on good authority that this will be a fun event! We love the Playhouse, and they always put on a great show – even if it is just to tell you what shows are coming up next season! Preview scenes and songs from next season’s shows will be performed by Playhouse actors. The event is free and open to all with a freewill offering being taken to assist the DOUBT company as it travels to Fargo, North Dakota on April 27 at the American Association of Community Theatre Region V Festival. This is another great way to introduce your family to a Lincoln tradition in a free, non-threatening, and brief manner. Young children probably won’t enjoy it – so I would suggest this event for older children and family members.

First Friday, April 5th, 2013 (North Lincoln)

North Lincoln has lots of art! Art Block and “Stepping Out” are a celebration of all that is to offer in the University Place business district.
